Frank John Spula is a distinguished Polish American civic leader, publisher, and longtime advocate for strengthening Polish–American relations. He has devoted nearly five decades to public service within the Polish American community at the local, national, and international levels.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, to an immigrant father and a Polish-American mother, Spula was raised in a home where the Polish language, traditions, and cultural values were an integral part of daily life. Growing up in a predominantly Polish immigrant neighborhood, he became acutely aware of the discrimination Poles often faced and witnessed firsthand the hardships endured by working-class immigrant families, particularly his own father, who spoke English with a noticeable accent.
Despite these challenges, his father remained deeply engaged in civic life, becoming active in local politics in Chicago’s 26th Ward. He stressed the importance of voting, U.S. citizenship, and civic participation, leaving a lasting impression on his son. Inspired by his father’s work ethic, integrity, and determination to overcome adversity, Spula developed a strong sense of social responsibility. His early exposure to systemic corruption and persistent discrimination further motivated him to become a dedicated advocate and voice for the Polish-American community.
As a student, he played in a band, The Mystics, with his brother and other musicians. The group performed regularly in downtown Chicago restaurants and at weddings, baptisms, and various celebrations. He also shared his love of music by giving accordion lessons. Music has remained a lifelong passion, as has his love for automobiles, particularly vintage vehicles.
Spula earned a degree in Business Administration and Psychology from DePaul University. His professional career began in 1976 when he joined the Polish National Alliance (PNA), America’s largest Polish American fraternal organization. Over the years, he advanced through a series of key leadership roles, working closely with prominent PNA and Polish American Congress (PAC) leaders, including Aloysius Mazewski and Edward Moskal. He later completed postgraduate studies in Life Insurance Office Management at the LOMA Institute in 1979.
In 1987, Spula was elected National Secretary of the PNA at the orga nization’s 40th National Convention in Chicago and was reelected to this national office in subsequent elections until 2005. Following the death of Edward Moskal, he was elected the 19th President of the Polish National Alliance at a national meeting in Philadelphia.
Later in 2005, Spula was elected the fourth National President of the Polish American Congress during the PAC National Council of Directors meeting in Washington, D.C. He served in this role continuously until October 2025, when he chose not to seek reelection and was named President Emeritus.
Within the PAC, he previously served as President of the Illinois Division from 1992 to 1999 and has been a member of the National Council of Directors for more than two decades.
As a national leader of American Polonia, Spula has played a pivotal role in fostering cooperation between Polish American institutions and the government of the Republic of Poland. He has hosted and met with numerous high-ranking Polish officials, including Presidents Lech Kaczyński, Bronisław Komorowski, Andrzej Duda, and Karol Nawrocki, Prime Ministers, and successive Polish ambassadors to the United States, and members of the Senate and Sejm.
As one of the most influential Polish American leaders engaged in U.S. public life, Spula organized major high-level meetings in Chicago that advanced Poland’s interests in the United States and helped shape American public and political understanding of Poland’s democratic transformation and strategic priorities. Through long-standing personal relationships with American legislators, he became a central figure in national policy dialogue related to Poland. He has worked directly with presidents, U.S. senators, members of Congress, governors, and mayors, and is widely recognized as a leading advocate for U.S.–Poland relations, consistently ensuring that the Polish-American perspective is heard, respected, and reflected at the highest levels of American government.
An outspoken advocate for civic engagement, Spula has consistently encouraged Polish Americans to participate actively in public life through voting, community leadership, and running for public office. A strong supporter of youth involvement, he has promoted educational, leadership, and cultural initiatives designed to inspire younger generations to remain engaged in Polonia and contribute to public service.
In 2016, he invited U.S. presidential candidates to engage with the Polish American Congress on U.S.–Polish relations. Donald Trump personally attended a PAC meeting in Chicago and publicly pledged to support Poland’s inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, which was realized in 2019, and increasing U.S. military presence in Poland. In 2022, under his leadership, the Polish American Congress mobilized nationwide fundraising efforts that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the Ukrainian people following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Through his longstanding commitment to strengthening U.S.–Poland relations and advocating for the needs of American Polonia, Spula has worked closely with international institutions focused on diaspora affairs, including Wspólnota Polska, Institute of National Remembrance, and the Rada Polonii Świata (World Polonia Council), helping to build lasting global partnerships and amplify the voice of Polish communities abroad. He has been widely recognized for strengthening global Polish diaspora cooperation and advancing the interests of American Polonia.
In recognition of his distinguished service, Spula has received numerous awards and honors from institutions and organizations in both the United States and Poland. Most notably, in 2011 he was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, presented by President Bronisław Komorowski, for his outstanding contributions to strengthening ties between Poland and the Polish diaspora.
In September 2024, he was appointed to the Polonia Advisory Council by Marshal of the Polish Senate Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska as the representative of the United States. In August 2025, he attended the inauguration of the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, in Warsaw as a member of the official United States delegation, marking a historic appointment and recognition of the Polish community in the United States.
In addition to his civic leadership, Frank J. Spula is the publisher of Dziennik Związkowy, the oldest Polish-language newspaper in the United States, and serves as President of Alliance Radio 103.1 FM. He serves as Director of the Edgebrook–Sauganash Chamber of Commerce in Chicago.
